A Story of Warmth and Community in Dominicus’ Beachfront Gift Shops Market

As you wander through the vibrant beachside community of Dominicus, the gentle sea breeze carries the scent of salt and adventure. Nestled among the lively oceanfront shops located between the Dreams Dominicus and Sunscape Dominicus resorts, a welcoming smile greets you at “La Niña Bonita” gift shop, one of 32 charming oceanfront souvenir stores brimming with treasures from the Dominican Republic. The store’s owner, Anderson “Andy” Neroland, exudes warmth as he invites visitors to browse his carefully curated selection of handcrafted Larimar jewelry, local artwork, and the famous Dominican mamajuana. But behind this inviting storefront lies a remarkable journey of resilience, generosity, and community spirit.

Meet Andy: The Story Behind the Gift Store

Originally from Petit-Trou de Nippes, Haiti, Andy’s journey to Dominicus began with an unexpected opportunity. While working as a vendor at the Viva Dominicus resort, he caught the attention of a Swiss customer who admired his dedication and enthusiasm. One day, she asked him, “Would you like to have a shop of your own?” Andy didn’t hesitate.

Encouraged by her support, he searched for an affordable store space. The cost? 500,000 Dominican pesos. His generous benefactor provided 400,000 pesos, and with his own savings, Andy made up the difference. That moment marked the beginning of Andy’s La Niña Bonita, a business he has proudly nurtured for over seven years.

“What I like the most about my business is that I can meet people. When you’re in Dominicus Beach, you find people of many nationalities who speak different languages; that’s what I like the most, not to mention the beach and sunsets which are spectacular.”

Inside La Niña Bonita: Treasures from the Caribbean

Stepping into Andy’s shop is like entering a colorful treasure trove of Dominican culture. The shelves glisten with Larimar, the rare blue gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic, while handcrafted bracelets and trinkets made by local artisans—including Andy’s own daughter—add a personal touch.

Among the most sought-after items is mamajuana, the legendary Dominican drink made with rum, honey, and herbs. Visitors eager to take home a true taste of the island often leave with a bottle, along with a piece of Larimar jewelry as a keepsake of their Caribbean adventure.

The Magic of Shopping Local: Stories from Visitors

One of Andy’s fondest memories as a shop owner involves a lively group of Chilean visitors. Initially, his store was simply known as “Shop #15,” but during one of their visits, the group insisted he needed a proper name.

After some brainstorming, one of the women exclaimed, “Number 15, La Niña Bonita! (The Beautiful Girl)” And just like that, La Niña Bonita was born. This group of friends continues to visit every year, bringing gifts of wine and sharing stories—a testament to the strong connections Andy has built with his customers.

Challenges, Dreams and the Future

Running a business by the beach comes with its challenges, particularly during the Caribbean’s hurricane season. Bad weather can disrupt sales for weeks, making it difficult for small business owners like Andy to sustain their livelihoods. Despite these obstacles, he remains optimistic. His dream? To expand his business and create more job opportunities for others in the community.

Above all, Andy hopes visitors understand the importance of supporting local businesses. “We are small, but if people visit, we can grow,” he says. “Every shop here provides for families, and when tourists shop locally, they help our entire community.”
